SBIR/STTR Phase 0
The federal SBIR/STTR programs are one of the best sources for funding to develop innovative technologies/products. The US government invests over $2.5B in small businesses annually through this program. The competitive awards are grants or contracts; the government does not ask for equity or repayment. Any IP typically stays with the company.
If you are a small business (<500 employees) and would like financial assistance in developing a new technology, Directed Energy strongly encourages you to explore this program. Please consult the following links:

Directed Energy will assist your efforts to participate in the SBIR/STTR program and has established a Phase 0 program in clean energy run by Insyte Consulting. Grant Awards of up to $2,000 are available to hire professionals who can assist you in preparing competitive Phase I proposals. Consulting assistance may be technical in nature or in building a compelling business case.
Insyte Consulting is the NYSTAR designated SBIR specialist for the Western New York and Finger Lakes regions and offers free assistance to interested applicant companies. The Directed Energy Phase 0 program is a tool for Insyte Consulting to better assist WNY companies working in alternative energy.
What you need to do:
Familiarize yourself with the SBIR/STTR programs by consulting the references provided above and the other sites they refer you to.
Contact Jack McGowan at Insyte Consulting (JMCGOWAN@insyte-consulting.com; 636-3626) to discuss your Phase 0 application which will be evaluated on the basis of technology appropriateness, how well your proposal matches the evaluation criteria of the agency you are applying to, and whether there is sufficient time to complete the proposal writing process. While you can apply at any time, do not wait until the last minute to write your proposals and apply for this assistance.
All consultants will be approved and managed by Insyte consulting. Prior consulting services can not be reimbursed using Phase 0 funds. The applicant company will be responsible for paying the consultant’s fees. However, when a proposal has been successfully submitted (evidenced by federal agency documentation), Directed Energy (via Insyte Consulting) will promptly refund up to $2,000 to the applicant company.
