Buildings consume 40% of all energy used in United States, 72% of all electricity generated and account for 38% of all CO2 emissions in the United States. Sustainable “green,” and high-performance building practices provide benefits which include improved occupant satisfaction and performance, reduced utility expenses, lower overall environmental impact, and valuable marketing. The demand for sustainable building practices is growing and understanding the challenges and benefits will allow businesses to understand and meet customer demand.

The conference will be preceded by a reception on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at the Darwin Martin House Complex in Buffalo, NY. This newly restored Frank Llyod Wright designed structure, is considered one of Wright’s finest achievements of the Prairie period and, indeed, of his entire career. During the reception, guests will have the opportunity for tours and networking.

Join us as we dig deep into the following three buildings that uniquely represent important lessons in sustainable building.

Who should attend: CEOs, COOs, CFOs, CTOs, CIOs, and other executives, managers, and decision-makers; researchers, academics, architects, and engineers; purchasing agents; builders and developers; and others involved with or interested in the opportunities resulting from recent innovation.

Sustainable Buildings

Welcome and Opening Remarks

Robert Shibley, Dean UB School of Architecture & Planning
Ryan McPherson, Chief Sustainability Officer, University at Buffalo
Daniel Spitzer, Partner, Hodgson Russ LLP

Ecology and Environment—Lancaster, NY

  • Designed and constructed over 20 years ago but did not require funda-mental building design changes to achieve LEED-EB Platinum rating
  • Use of natural ventilation, indoor planting, natural and local materials and other biophilic design attributes
  • Continuous innovation and measurement of environmental performance

Kevin Neumaier (President & CEO of Ecology and Environment) and Eric Lindstrom (Associate Vice President, Sustainability Coordinator at Cannon Design) will discuss the history of the building in the context of modern green building design, its timeless passive design features, LEED certification, ongoing improvements, and careful measurement and documentation of performance.

Stratus Vineyards—Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

  • 1st LEED Certified vineyard in the world
  • A state of the art production facility benefiting from a unique mesoclimate moderated by the effects of two bodies of water: the Niagara River and Lake Ontario
  • A marvel of efficiency, sustainability and flexibility, designed to produce limited quantities of wine based on a true gravity-flow system
  • Geothermal heating and cooling technology; use of recycled materials; energy efficient electric and plumbing systems; and a toxin-free waste management system

Les Andrew, Architect on the project, along with key contractors, Alan Greer (Ausenco Sandwell) and Michael Pelton (Sustainable Design Consultant with Fluent Group) will discuss the story behind the desire to be a LEED Certified vineyard and the unique features of the building and wine production process.

Bank of America Building—One Bryant Park, New York, NY

  • One of the world’s most environmentally responsible high rise buildings and the first skyscraper designed to attain Platinum LEED Certification
  • Iconic part of the NYC skyline: second tallest building in the NYC and fourth tallest in the U.S.
  • Construction of the 55-story, 2.1 million sf tower was completed in 2009
  • Sustainable strategies range from biophilic and recycled materials to on-site cogeneration and load-shifting via thermal ice storage

Serge Appel (Associate Partner at Cook + Fox Architects) lead Architect on the Bank of America Bryant Park Project, along with client representative Amanda Kaminsky (Sustainable Construction Manager at Durst Organization) and Vinnie Galatro ((Commissioning Agent with Fulcrum Group) will discuss the challenges associated with implementing such a large scale project and the complex process of incorporating such a diverse array of sustainable strategies in one building.

Keynote Speakers

Kevin Burke
Carrie Meinberg Burke

Co-founders and Principals of PARABOLA Architecture + Industrial Design

The closing keynote presentation focuses on design optimization as a process for creating measurable, positive effects across a range of scales and project types. PARABOLA principals Carrie Meinberg Burke AIA and Kevin Burke AIA LEED AP draw upon their diverse national and international experience in applying advanced sustainability protocols including “Cradle to Cradle” and “The Living Building Challenge.” Their talk explores emerging trends in synergistic, performance-based design approaches that incorporate nature’s principles to generate regenerative impacts over time.
